Search the FAQ for entries containing:

Your Encryption Key is vital information. You must have this information if you ever intend to restore your files to a new computer, or even just to reinstall the software to a new computer.

If you have already installed the software, or had a technician do so for you, and you need to retrieve this information afterwards then please follow the steps below to do so. You may want to print these instructions.

  1. Open True Disaster Recovery.
  2. Click on the Settings button.
  3. Click on the Encryption menu on the top left.
  4. Select the option "Change Encryption Key".
  5. Enter your backup account password. (Contact support if you need this.)
  6. Do not change any options on this screen - simply click the button labled "Create Key File".
  7. You will be prompted to select a location to save the encryption key files. It is highly recommended that these files be placed onto an external flash drive or floppy disk and kept in a safe place where it can be retreived when needed - such as in the event that you need to recover your files to a new server after a disaster.
  8. Select a location and click OK to save the files. Two files are created: recovery.dat and recovery.dsk. Click OK on the info screen labled "Emergency Recovery File Created" to move on.
  9. Next you are provided with the Encryption Key information in a readable form. This window shows all the information you would need to type in manually in the event that you have to recover your data and do not have access to the key files created in the previous step above.
  10. Print this information, or write it down, and store it in a safe place. The required fields are: Username, Password, Account Group (6 digits), Encryption Method, and Encryption Key (ASCII).

Please note that the Encryption Key (ASCII) is case-sensitive and MUST be recorded correctly in order to work and unlock your data.

The backup server administrators do not have any type of master password or key to unlock your data, and there is no way for them to break the encryption.

In the event that you need access to your data you will be asked to provide either the printed information, or a copy of the Encryption Key Files that you created earlier. Without them, we will not be able to unlock your files.
