How to fix your Printers in Terminal Server

Questions:

  • Why can I see All the printers in the system?
  • Why can I see other people's printers in the system?
  • How come I cannot see any of my printers in the system?

Reason:

This usually occurs when the Tricerat ScrewDrivers printing software is not installed onto your local workstation. The server does not have any instructions on what printer to assign you and so it sometimes shows you all printers. Even though you cannot print to those printers you are still able to see them.

Resolution:

Please go to the downloads area of this support system and download and install the Tricerat ScrewDrivers printing software onto your local workstation.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. If you have a 32 bit Windows operating system: Click on, or copy this link into your browser's address bar: http://kotter.helpserve.com/index.php?_m=downloads&_a=viewdownload&downloaditemid=1&nav=0,1
  2. If you have a 64 bit Windows operating system: Click on, or copy this link into your browser's address bar: http://kotter.helpserve.com/index.php?_m=downloads&_a=viewdownload&downloaditemid=2&nav=0,1
  3. Click on the Download button in the center of the screen.
  4. Click on the Run button when prompted with the security warning. (Figure 1 below)
  5. When the download completes you will be prompted again with the security warning, click Run again here. (Figure 2 below)
  6. Click Next on the first setup screen.
  7. Click Next again on the second screen. Unless you have reason to change to install path we suggest that you leave it as it appears by default. This is a very lightweight installation and only takes up a MB or two on your HDD.
  8. Leave the selection for Complete set and simply click Next on the third screen. (Figure 3 below) Consult with the support team before performing a custom installation if you are not familiar with these settings.
  9. On the final screen simply click on the Install button on the bottom of the window.
  10. Once the installation completes, click on the Finish button when prompted.
  11. Open up your Control Panel and double-click on the ScrewDrivers Client v4 icon. ScrewDrivers Client v4 Control Panel icon
  12. Switch over to the Printers tab. (Figure 4 below)
  13. Highlight the printer from the left-hand column that you wish to add and place it into the upper-right hand box labled Preferred Printers by clicking on the Add-> button next to it. These are the printers that will be connected to the server when you log in. You may have a maximum of 3 printers in this list, any more than that will not be connected, only the top 3 in this list will be made available.
  14. Click Apply, and then OK to finish the setup.

The next time you log in to the server your printers should now be available to you. If you were already logged into the server when you performed these steps then you will need to log out of the server and then back in again before the printers will be connected.

Troubleshooting

If you are still having problems with your printers not appearing there are a few things to check for. It is best if a technician performs these steps for you, but if you understand them you should have no problems getting this to work.

First make sure you can print to the printer from your local computer. (Outside of the server environment.) If your local computer cannot print to it then the server will not be able to because it uses your computer as the hub between the server and the printer to pass along the documents. In other words, if the bridge isn't there the documents can't cross the river.

Another thing we have found that interferes with the printers on the server is the setting in the login icon to map the printers. By right-clicking on the login icon and selecting Edit you can view the settings for your connection. Switch to the Local Resources tab to remove the check mark for Printers. You do not want this marked because it will block the Screwdrivers we installed above from connecting your printers to the server.
